The 27 Nakshatras are the lunar mansions of Vedic astrology — divisions of the 360° zodiac into 27 segments of 13°20' each. Where the 12 signs give you the broad strokes, the Nakshatras give you the resolution that drives the Vimshottari Dasha system and most Vedic prediction.
How Nakshatras work
Each Nakshatra has:
- A ruling planet (one of the nine grahas, in repeating order: Ketu, Venus, Sun…)
- A deity (e.g. Ashwini Kumars for Ashwini, Brahma for Rohini)
- A symbol and a gana (deva / manushya / rakshasa)
- A pada — each Nakshatra has 4 padas of 3°20' each
