How to Read Your Kundali: A Beginner's Guide to Vedic Birth Charts

How to read a kundali — Lagna, planet placements, houses, dashas, and yogas. A clear walk-through of what each part of your Vedic birth chart actually means.

A kundali is the Sanskrit word for a Vedic birth chart — a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment and place of your birth. Most people see one once, do not understand it, and forget about it. This guide walks you through the parts of a kundali in the order an experienced Jyotishi reads them.

The four things to find first

Before any predictions, locate these four anchors in your chart:

  1. Lagna (Ascendant) — the rising sign on the eastern horizon at your birth.
  2. Moon sign (Rashi) — the sign your Moon was in.
  3. Sun sign — the sign your Sun was in (sidereal, not the Western tropical sign).
  4. Current Mahadasha — which planet is presently ruling your life-chapter.

These four together give you about 60% of what you need to start reading.

Lagna: the lens through which your chart speaks

Your Lagna is the most important point in the chart. It determines which sign starts in the 1st house, which then sets the lord of every other house. A Cancer Lagna and a Sagittarius Lagna read the same planetary placements completely differently — same planets, different meanings.

The 12 houses

Each house represents a domain of life. The order:

  1. Self — body, identity, vitality
  2. Wealth & speech — accumulated resources, family
  3. Siblings & courage — short journeys, communication
  4. Mother & home — emotional foundations, property
  5. Creativity & children — intelligence, romance
  6. Health & service — daily work, illness, debt
  7. Marriage & partnerships — long-term unions
  8. Transformation & longevity — inheritance, occult
  9. Dharma & higher learning — guru, fortune, philosophy
  10. Career & public standing — reputation, authority
  11. Gains & networks — friends, income, fulfilment of desires
  12. Liberation & hidden — losses, foreign lands, spiritual release

Yogas — the patterns that matter

Yogas are specific planetary configurations that produce strong, named effects. Raj Yoga (kingly yoga) brings authority. Gaja Kesari brings fame and intellect. Kemadruma brings emotional isolation. Identifying the yogas in your chart is where Vedic astrology starts to feel less generic and more specifically about you.

FAQ

Do I need my exact birth time to read a kundali?

For Lagna and house-based reading, yes. Without it, you can still do Moon-sign and Nakshatra-based work, but degree-precise predictions are not reliable.

What is the difference between Vedic and Western charts?

Western astrology uses tropical zodiac (anchored to seasons); Vedic uses sidereal (anchored to fixed stars), with Lahiri ayanamsa applied. Your "Vedic Sun sign" will typically be one sign earlier than your Western Sun sign.

Are South Indian and North Indian kundali charts different?

The data is identical; only the visual layout differs. South Indian charts use a fixed-sign square grid; North Indian charts use a fixed-house diamond grid. Either is fine — most professionals use both.
