The Ashtakoot system
The 36 points come from 8 categories (kootas):

A score of 18+ is considered acceptable; 24+ is good.
What guna milan misses
Guna milan only uses Moon's Nakshatra. It does not consider:
- Mangal Dosha (Mars affliction in 1, 4, 7, 8, 12 houses) — must be checked separately.
- 7th house compatibility — Venus, 7th lord, and 7th house in both charts.
- Dasha periods — are both partners entering supportive Mahadashas at the marriage time?
A "32 out of 36" guna milan with ignored Mangal Dosha mismatch is a worse match than a "20 out of 36" with all dosha checks done.

What is the minimum guna count for marriage?
Most traditions accept 18+. Below 18 is generally a red flag. Above 24 is considered very compatible.
What if there is Mangal Dosha?
Mangal Dosha can be cancelled by various rules — same dosha in partner's chart, age, certain remedies. A flat "Mangal Dosha = no marriage" reading is unsophisticated; a real astrologer will check the dosha-cancellation rules.
